Speedy Sums

Speed Maths

Speed maths is the skill of calculating quickly and accurately in your head. It matters in timed exams, aptitude tests and everyday life. It is trained the same way as any other speed: short, timed repetitions with a score to beat.

How Speedy Sums trains speed

  • A clock on every round. Choose 30, 60 or 120 seconds and answer as many sums as you can.
  • Zero delay. The next question appears the instant your answer is right, so all your time goes on thinking.
  • Pace, not just score. Results show your seconds per sum and your accuracy, the two numbers that actually measure speed.
  • Your slowest sums. Each game ends with the questions that took longest, so you know what to work on.

A simple routine

  • Warm up with one easy round to settle into a rhythm.
  • Do two or three rounds at a level where you score between 15 and 30 in a minute.
  • Finish with the daily challenge and try to beat yesterday.

Five minutes a day done this way is enough to see your pace per sum drop within a couple of weeks.

Speed comes from method

Fast calculators are not thinking faster; they are doing less work per sum. Our mental maths tricks page covers ten shortcuts worth learning, and instant recall of your times tables underpins all of them. When you want competition, the Sprint and Brain Burner challenges on the home page rank you against other players.
