Mental Subtraction Practice

Subtraction is where many people slow down. Short, regular practice against the clock makes taking away feel as natural as adding.

9 − 4 = 583 − 21 = 62512 − 68 = 444

Tricks that make it faster

  • Count up instead of taking away: for 83 − 68, go from 68 to 70 (2), then to 83 (13), making 15.
  • Round the number you are taking away: 74 − 29 is 74 − 30 = 44, then add 1 back to get 45.
  • Take away the tens, then the ones: 96 − 34 is 96 − 30 = 66, then 66 − 4 = 62.

How it works

You get 60 seconds of subtraction questions. Type the answer and the next one appears instantly, with no button to press. Four difficulty levels take you from first steps to genuinely hard, and your best score is saved on your device so you can watch it climb.

You can change the level, the time limit and the mix of question types on the home page.
