Mental Maths for Kids
Speedy Sums is a simple, cheerful way for children to practise mental maths. Rounds are short, feedback is instant and the only thing to beat is your own best score. It is free and has no adverts. Children can play without an account.
Where to start
- Just starting out: choose Add and Subtract on the Student level, which uses numbers from 1 to 10. Try the “No limit” timer first so there is no pressure.
- Learning times tables: the times tables page lets a child practise one table at a time, with a chart to check against.
- Ready for more: the Disciple level moves to two-digit sums, and the extra question types add percentages, fractions and missing numbers.
Why short rounds work
Children learn number facts best through little and often. A 30 or 60 second round is long enough to get into a rhythm and short enough to want another go. Getting an answer wrong costs nothing but a moment, and the results screen shows which sums were tricky, with the answers, so they know what to look at next time.
For parents and teachers
- It runs in any browser on a phone, tablet, laptop or classroom whiteboard.
- There is nothing to install and nothing to pay for.
- Free play collects no personal information. Scores are saved only on the device being used.
- Leaderboards and the daily challenge need an account with Google sign-in, so they are for older students and adults. Younger children can enjoy everything else without one.
- Four colour themes and optional sound effects, with a mute button for quiet classrooms.
