Percentages turn up in discounts, tips, tax and test scores. Practise finding them in your head until 15% of anything is automatic.
10% of 70 = 725% of 120 = 3015% of 180 = 27
Tricks that make it faster
- Find 10% first by dividing by 10, then build from it: 30% is three lots, 5% is half of one.
- Percentages swap round: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4.
- 25% is a quarter, so halve and halve again. 75% is that quarter taken away from the whole.
