Finding a fraction of an amount is two small steps done quickly. Practise until three-quarters of 28 takes no thought at all.
1/2 of 12 = 63/4 of 28 = 215/8 of 64 = 40
Tricks that make it faster
- Divide by the bottom number, then multiply by the top: 3/4 of 28 is 28 ÷ 4 = 7, then 7 × 3 = 21.
- A half of a half is a quarter, and half of that is an eighth, so repeated halving covers many fractions.
- Check your answer makes sense: three-quarters of a number must be a little less than the number itself.
